“roots” is BXTCH’s first zine. “roots” is a collection of original poetry and
photography. “roots” is an exploration of trauma as it relates to Black women,
family, and work. Each poem offers a different view of the role Black women play
in the lives of their family members, and the life of the author in particular. In
this zine Black women are cast in the roles of caregiver, breadwinner, victim,
abuser, and role model. The productive and reproductive labor of Black women
and the stress of gendered household/family dynamics it produces are complexly
detailed in this account.
